Hey people! So finally our favorite show, Life on Mars, has aired its final episode. The short journey of the US version of this hit British series came to an end in the first week of April, when the final episode of Season 1 was aired. However, not everyone is happy with the way the series ended and the fans of the show are divided over whether this was the perfect ending or the show could have done better.

Some people have liked the ending given to Life on Mars while others have termed it to be the worst kind of ending a series could get. The ending, which revealed the entire show to be no more than a computer simulation going on in Sam’s mind, is completely different from the ending given to the original British version in 2007, where Sam wakes up from a coma to discover a new life.

Personally I felt the writers could give a much better ending to the show than what we saw in the final episode. Like me, millions of eager fans tuned in, in large numbers to watch the much anticipated season finale of Life on Mars and it is really sad that they were totally disappointed by what they saw. One of my friends, Nichole, who is a great fan of Life on Mars, told me that she did not at all like the way the show ended and felt cheated about all characters and their relationships with each other.

But whether you liked the ending or not, the fact remains that Life on Mars has finally bid farewell to its fans on the American cable network. The show which could have been one of the best shows on the American cable network was cancelled only after it completed airing Season 1. But given the way in which the show ended, I feel that had it continued, it would perhaps have grown into a horrible show during its second season. So its better that the show ended at a time when we can still remember it as a great show. And who knows, maybe the show might still be revived later by a better team of writers!

According to ABC the reason behind the cancellation of Life on Mars was that it did not get very good ratings. But then I blame that to the network’s decision of changing the airing time halfway through the series. Probably the series would have done much better had it been retained in its original time slot when it was paired with Lost! This is what angers me most. First the network for no apparent reason, decides to change the time slot of a series that is settling in and then when the series fails to get good ratings in its new time slot, it is cancelled.

This is not the first show that has been cancelled due to this nonsensical attitude and I am sure this is not going to be the last. But, this is definitely one of my favorite shows and I am really upset about the way it is being dumped. I have loved every aspect of Life on Mars, be it the storyline, the performance of the actors, the direction or the creativity. I have loved awesome soundtrack and felt creepy when its weird robots crept out of people’s eyes. I have felt disturbed by the over-the-top police brutality and occasional vaudevillian fisticuffs and have been entertained by its snappy dialogue and the oh-so-relaxed attitude. I am definitely going to miss Life on Mars badly.

In the past few weeks we have seen many shows being cancelled or the artists being laid off just because their budgets were beyond reach. A spokesperson of the Fox Network has reportedly said that these are really challenging economic times and since everyone is aware of the decrease in revenues, these steps are necessary to protect the entertainment business. Well, I really agree with the guy, its better to make some compromises rather than lose some good quality television.

It is yet to be determined how deeply the budget cuts will affect Life on Mars. I personally feel that we will get to see less of location shooting, axing a guest star here and there, and possibly even considering a clip episode. The trimmed cost accounts to nearly half the cost of a single episode in a standard 22-episode season. But I think that location shooting and guest stars are simply add-ons that can boost a good series. However, if a series is really bad, I mean if it is not well written or directed then even these things can’t save it. But thankfully, Life on Mars series is a well written and well created series that can survive on its own without the support of such trivial effects. And I think we can compromise a little to keep our most loved series on air. So guys, if you don’t find the locales as interesting, just remember that you are watching a good show not a beautiful locale.

I was attracted towards the series after watching its dazzling promos. Harvy Keitel in action, beating people brutally, slow motion chase scenes and above all seventies music, raised my curiosity one level up to catch the show. In this episode, Sam runs into his 2006 mentor officer Fletcher Bellow. Contrary to 2006, Fletcher is pretty young then. Although, he works with Sam on a case, but doesn’t recognize him, Whereas Sam recognizes him. It seems a bit ghostly situation. Sam is of his actual age as in 2006 and is present in 1973. On the other hand, Bellow is also in 1973, but he’s young like he has to be in 1973. Only Sam’s age doesn’t get affected. Bellow doesn’t recognize him because he has to meet him in future, after about 33 years. Anyways this doesn’t affect their investigations. They solve the case together.

This episode is not only my favorite, as I read somewhere that this episode has got highest ratings among aired episodes till now. This episode has made me more curious for further episodes. I am sure this show will run for more seasons.

What I like the most about the show is its characters. In fact every character has a different color, which I have not seen in any other police drama since long. The characters are less serious and everybody is exactly opposite of other. For an example, have a look at Sam Tyler and Gene Hunt. Sam can be called brainy, as he does everything the way it is suggested by law. He is called by the book cop. On the contrary, it will be right to say about Gene Hunt that rules are meant to be broken. He’s the guy, who believes in action first and the word later on.

He beats the shit out of criminals on the basis of his assumption that the person is culprit. At that time he doesn’t care about where evidences point to. But later on when Sam shakes him by reminding rules, then he gives another thought to what he did.

I equally adore Sam’s character. He is confused over his arrival in 1973; still he is loyal towards his duty. Nevertheless, is courageous enough to adjust with the new circumstances and new people. He even forgets his real love of 2006 and develops a new relationship with Annie in 1973. I wonder if this is just his imagination how did he fall in love with a lady he has never ever met till 2006. Well, this is one of the surprises, the series is carrying along. Undoubtedly this is the factor, which prompts me to watch every next episode.

I like Sam in scenes with Annie because whenever they are about to kiss, they always get interuppted. During seven episodes, they have developed feelings for each other but couldn’t turn it into romance.

Gene Hunt’s drinking habit is funnier than his impatient violence. In an episode, he drinks with a dead man in the room throughout the night. Also I loved his dialogue in the scene, when Annie Cartwright joins the police force, but is afraid of weapons. Gene says, “Y’see, this is why birds and CID don’t mix.” Hear it in Harvey Keitel’s distinct style and you will too become his fan.
